Abstract

Regional park Mura-Drava is the only Croatian park of this type of nature preservation. It extends throughout five northest Croatian counties and it is a part of a Transboundary Biosphere Reserve Mura-Drava-Dunav. This regional park excels in its exceptional nature preservation, opulence of its flora and fauna and its specific demographic features. Moreover, within the regional park three hydroelectric power plants were built, two of which are situated in Međimurje county. All three hydropower plants have both positive and negative influence on the river landscape, agricultural land and the forest land. They also cause changes in water quality. Dams have significant negative effects. They slow down the motion of water course and change water features. This entails negative consequences for the whole ecosystem and river biotope. Even though negative effects of hydroelectric power plants are known, the plants are still important for getting eletric power and they have multipurpose use. Therefore, in the regional park an incentive in sustainable development in the form of ecological agriculture and ecotourism is needed.
