Abstract

Cities have always played an important role in the development of regions and countries, and their importance grows with the process of industrialization and the accompanying urbanization when industry and the population is concentrating in the cities. Maribor and Rijeka are industrial towns and, in addition to the main cities Ljubljana and Zagreb, one of the leaders of development in their countries. Both cities had developed industrial production that began in the early 19th century, and today it is found on one of the major milestones so far. The transition is marked by the economic crisis when it started the process of leaving factories and rising unemployment. In order to the old industrial areas could deal with competition coming from globalization, it is necessary to find a new function or to restructure the industry.
