Railways hold the leading part in transportation of passangers in Japan. That applies mostly to major Japanese cities. Railway system represents efficient solution for country that lacks raw materials and is dependent on importing fossil fuels. Since first rail lines have been built in Japan, they have become the spine of transport development between major cities and their respective suburbs. Urban metropolitan areas have been spread radially along with rail lines. National railway network spreaded gradually, which resulted in integration of Japanese urban system, and major cities were connected into a unique complex. Good traffic connection led to enormous industrial an economic development of Japan. Numerous Japanese techological innovations are the framework for modern traffic development. That especially refers to the construction of high-speed rail network, widely known Shinkansen. Transport accessibility and traveling quality have significantly increased. Railways have great role in spatial and historical development of Japan, therefore
