Waste is a huge problem of humanity because it directly threatens the health of people, wildlife and air pollution. By Croatian accession to the European Union in 2013, the country was forced to adapt new provisions concerning the protection of nature and environment. Proper waste management aims to reduce the production of waste, also deals with the collection, evaluation, sorting and disposal of residual waste. The waste management system on the island Krk is the first and most successful management in Croatia with more than 60,000 tonnes of separately collected waste in the past 10 years, and with 50.1% separately collected waste in 2015. Prelog and Donje Medjimurje are following the example of the island Krk, and they are also investing in waste management. They stand out with 49.58% separately collected waste in 2015, of which 71% is biodegradable waste.
