Abstract

Blackspotted smoothhound, Mustelus punctulatus (Risso, 1826) is a commercial species, potentially endangered, as a result of excessive fishing in the northern Adriatic sea. From February 2005 until July 2007, 95 male sharks were collected with bottom trawlers on the territory of the northern Adriatic Sea. Total body length (TBL) of collected animals was between 44,6 - 126,5 cm, with the medium value 76,4 ± 21,4 cm. Comparison between TBL and animal body mass gave a positive Spearman's correlation (rs = 0,985, p < 0,05), as well as the comparison between TBL and gonad mass (rs = 0,852, p < 0,05). The smallest animal with onset of spermatogenesis, has had TBL 67, 4 cm, while smallest sexualy maturated mail had TBL 79, 8 cm. Gonadosomatic index and the presence of most developed spermatogenetic stages in testes suggest a gonad growth during the autumn, mating in winter and spring months, and the inactive phase during the summer.
