Požega is an old Slavonian town that has been mentioned since antiquity in the context of the Roman Vallis aurea. The uniqueness of the physical-geographical characteristics influenced its historical development and design as well as a rich interesting history and culture. Over the centuries Požega was influenced by different rulers and cultural civilization circles that resulted in today's status and character of Pozega. The name of town Požega was first mentioned in the 13th century. During eight centuries it passed many changes, survived the many wars and shifts of different authorities. Thanks to its location on the crossroads of the slopes of the Požeška gora and river Orljava it managed to maintain to this day. It can be said that it is one of the oldest settlements in Western Slavonia. Today is the seat of Požeško-slavonska county, Pozega Diocese, the University, and once was the residence of the Turkish sanjak.
