Abstract

Hydrocarbons are molecules made out of carbon and hydrogen. They occur for a long period of time going through a very complex cycle that depends on various biotic and abiotic factors. The origin, migration, accumulation and preseration, or degradation and destruction of hydrocarbons are the key processes that determine the end result of hydrocarbon reservoirs. This paper explains the occurance of hydrocarbons, which are the factors that infulence and determine their formation, what is happening with hydrocarbons when they leave source rock and how migration and accumulation occur.
