Abstract

Composition and structure of caddisfly (Trichoptera, Insecta) communities are determined by many ecological parameters typical for specific habitats. Plitvice Lakes NP was chosen for studying ecology of caddisflies due to high variety of aquatic habitats. The main goals of this study were to define and compare faunistics, community structure, i.e. emergence patterns and trophic structure of caddisflies at two ecologically different karst habitats, with special emphasis on microhabitats. Adult caddisflies were collected over a three-year period (2008-2010) using emergence traps at two different habitats (tufa barrier and spring). A total of 7842 individuals and 48 species were collected. Larger number of specimens but lower species richness and diversity were recorded for the Bijela rijeka spring during all three years of the study. Only five taxa were common to both study sites. Over three years, emergence peaks were recorded in June for both study sites. At the spring, trichopteran community was dominated by ‘scrapers-shredders', and at tufa barrier by ‘collector filterers- predators-scrapers’. In accordance with feeding preferences of most abundant species at particular site, caddisflies preferred gravel and macrovegetation and moss, at the spring and tufa barrier, respectively.
