Danio rerio, zebrafish, is a fish from the family Cyprinidae, up to 5 cm long and 2,5 cm wide. Originating from India, it is also commonly found in the shallow waters and ponds of Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Blue horizontal stripes extend along the body. Female zebrafish are bigger than the male. Embryonic development of the zebrafish lasts up to 72 hours after the fertilization, during which the embryo goes through seven stages of development: zygote, cleavage stage, blastula, gastrula, segmentation, pharyngula and hatching. After the hatching follows larval stadium in the duration of 27 days, after which the larva firstly develops into a juvenil and then into an adult organism. Organism old 90 days after the fertilization is considered to be fully matured. Danio rerio is used as a vertebrate model organism, mostly in the genetic research of the embryonic development. Some of the advantages of a zebrafish serving as a model organism are the simplicity of cultivation, and the possibilty of manipulation with breeding and embryos. Also, the short duration of embryo development and their great accessability, due to the fact that female zebrafish can spawn up to 200 eggs at once, enable the short duration of experiments. High transparency of the embryoid and larval stages simplifies the identification and the visualisation. Besides in the developmental biology, zebrafish is also used as a model organism in genetics, neurobiology, oncolgy, evolutionary biology... Lately protocols and tools for the genetic manipulation have been made, which makes Danio rerio especially suitable for the research of the gene regulation, and thus also of the development process and the function of all vertebrates.
