Abstract

Plants exposed to heavy metals uptake a certain amount of metal ions which interfere with cell homeostasis. Plants have developed mechanisms of avoidance, detoxification and tolerance of heavy metals in order to reduce their harmful effects. Such mechanisms are generally based on chelation, subcellular compartmentalization and neutralization of ROS. Phytochelatins are a type of chelators which are only synthesised in the presence of heavy metals. They form complexes with them and transport them to the vacuole and thus assist in the creation of heavy metal tolerance in plants.
