Abstract

With the rapid industrial and technological development of the human race, our environment and living organisms inhabiting it are exposed to various kinds of toxicities; genotoxicity being the most concerning due to its ability to cause damage of genetic material, which can, depending on the cell affected, be passed onto the next generation. The need for genotoxicity to be monitored has been recognised in the 20th century, and since then a whole spectrum of extremely effective genotoxicity tests has been developed. In this work, a short review of the most used genotoxicity tests and their properties has been presented, along with the explanation of their role in biomonitoring of the environment.
