In the world there is an increasing discharge of waste water. The reason for this is the growth of world population and rapid industrialization. As a countermeasure for pollution caused by the development of human civilization, there is a search for new, efficient and cost-effective methods of purifying water. One of the many results of such countermeasures, was development of the method of purifying water with immobilized bacteria in biofilms on mineral zeolite. This article talks about the potential of using such a method for the purification of water, and also talks about its advantages and disadvantages, as well as trying to cover the breadth of capabilities and variables that affect the results. This paper discusses the phosphates as they are the one of the most widespread pollutants worldwide. Also discussed are the organisms that are adequate for removing phosphate from the water, in particular the bacteria of the genus Acinetobacter. Paper also discusses various minerals from the group of zeolites which could potentially serve as a good surface for said bacteria.
