Abstract

Diatoms are one of the most important organisms living in periphyton and phytobenthos. The assemblages of diatoms are of great importance for assessing the ecological status of inland running waters. Diatom communities of Krčić Spring were sampled from June 2012 to November 2015. The Krčić Spring is intermittent, with proper changing of constant flow and dried up period. Diatom flora consisted of 36 taxa, with Achnanthidium minutissimum, Meridion ciculare var. circulare, Nitzschia fonticola, Navicula cryptotenella and Encyonema silesiacum as dominant species. Main environmental variable in during the investigation period spring were: pH, conductivity, alkalinity, oxygen saturation and current velocity. According to their ecological requirement most of the taxa of Krčić Spring were alkaliphilous and circumneutral, eutraphentic and oligo- to eutraphentic, with fairly high to continuously high oxygen requirements. The ecological status of springs was estimated by using Trophic Diatom index (TIDRH) and Saprobic Index (SIHRIS). According to both indices the ecological status of Krčić Spring was moderate.
