Abstract

In this experiment the effect of fluorescent and LED light on growth and photosynthesis of duckweed (Lemna minor L.) was evaluated. Plants were grown on two different nutrient solutions – Steinberg medium and Pirson and Seidel medium, for 14 days in two subcultures. Light type influenced the results more significantly than the composition of nutrient media. Growth rates based on frond number, fresh weight, number of colonies as well as total plant surface were better under fluorescent light. Protein content and guaiacol peroxidase activity were more influenced by the composition of nutrient media. These two parameters were higher in plants grown on Pirson and Seidel medium, especially in the second subculture. In general, the content of photosynthetic pigments was higher in the first subculture. In the second subculture the content of pigments under LED light exceeded the content of pigments in plants grown under fluorescent light. In plants grown on Steinberg medium and under LED light significant increase of effective quantum yield of photosystem II, electron transport rate and photochemical quenching, compared to fluorescent light, has been noticed in the second subculture. According to obtained results it can be concluded that growth of duckweed plants during 14-days experiment was better under fluorescent light, while the photosynthetic performance was better in plants grown under LED light.
