Abstract

Springs represent contact between subterranean and surface ecosystems integrating them into a complex structure of heterogeneous habitats with specific physicochemical features and unique crenobiocoenosis. The composition and diversity of macroinvertebrate fauna and ecological state of the karst spring Prud in the delta of the Neretva River were evaluated during the four sampling season (March, May, September 2014 and January 2015) The 60 samples were collected at the spring source on the dominated macrophyte substrate using standard benthos net. No significant changes were recorded during the two years measurement (March 2014 to November 2015) of physicochemical parameters. Macroinvertebrate community composition indicates domination of Gastropoda and Amphipoda as a permanent and Diptera (Chironomidae) as a temporary aquatic fauna group during the all seasons. According to macroinvertebrate composition, species diversity and analysed physicochemical water properties, water from the spring Prud was assessed as a water quality class III (moderate). Comparison of recent with previous research showed there were no significant changes in ecological state during the past 20 years. The unique hydrogeology, geomorphology and macroinvertebrate composition of the karst spring Prud represent a major contribution to a local and regional diversity and can serve as a model to further research of springs in the delta of the Neretva River.
