Research was conducted on 54 points in the area of Petrova gora; a survey of forest songbird communities was conducted using the point transect method, in parallel with a survey of vegetation characteristics on the same points, using the circular plot method. In total 40 bird species were recorded, 18 of which (forest songbirds) underwent qualitative analysis. Tree basal area was used to group the investigated points into three forest types: beech, oak and mixed. Total estimated density of breeding forest songbirds was 823 pairs per km2. The two most abundant species across all forest types were the Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs and the European Robin Erithacus rubecula, while the third most numerous species varied according to forest type. Oak and mixed forests showed significantly greater bird abundance, diversity and evenness than pure beech forests, while forest age also contributed to the above. A notable presence of the Stock Dove Columba oenas was recorded in this area and further steps are required regarding its protection.
