Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the composition, dynamics and patterns of colonization of macroinvertebrates and the flow of energy in respect to the canopy coverage of the habitat, and the stability and color of the experimental artificial substrate. The study was conducted at the spring of the Jankovac stream (NP Papuk) during five days, using artificial substrates that mimicked moss mats. Spring Jankovac is located on an isolated karst area, while the surrounding area is built of metamorphic and igneous rocks. Physico-chemical parameters of water showed similar conditions throughout the study area. The most numerous representatives of macroinvertebrates in the experimental substrates were Gammarus fossarum and insect larvae of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Chironomidae (Diptera). Most of the observed groups colonized the substrates more actively at shaded habitats and especially unattached substrates. Individuals of some groups showed different movement activity between day and night. There was a positive correlation in colonizing macrozoobenthos with the amount of organic and inorganic substances on artificial surfaces.
