Abstract

Biology is the second most common elective class at the final examination 2015, and a large number of students were participating in the competition in biology. The competition in biology 2014/2015 was attended by 362 students whose exams were analyzed in this paper. The aim of the study was a qualitative and quantitative analysis of questions and comparison of the number and success between classes and gender. The analysis was attended by 10 professors from different working experience for the preparation of questions for the competition, and analysis is conducted in accordance with the Curriculum for a certain class and examination catalog for the final examination in biology as reference points for the conceptual framework and anticipated outcomes. After the analysis, 12 issues were discussed in detail and presented in this paper. The analysis shows that the largest number of students were represented the third, and the smallest number of students in the fourth grade. The questions in the exams have a very good quality, but the representation of cognitive levels is different. There were a lot of misconception related to genetics and protein synthesis, and problems with reading and interpreting graphs. Results from the analysis can be further used to improve the quality issues and the development of competence in biology at students of high school population.
