Abstract

Up to this date, no study of the feeding behaviour of the family Rajidae in the Adriatic has been made. The knowledge of the feeding behaviour of marine predators is essential for comprehending their ecological role and factors that affect it. In the Northern Adriatic, in four years time (2011-2015), 86 specimens of starry skate (Raja asterias) have been gathered. All skates were measured and sexed. The stomach content of each skate was analyzed. Analysis showed that their main pray were decapods, followed by teleost fish. The importance of teleosts in the diet of R. asterias shows an oncogenic growth. The most common prey species found was the masked crab, Ethusa mascarone. Small vacuity index (VI) shows that the starry skate is an active and succesful predator of benthic prey species.
