Abstract

Citrus exocortis viroid (CEVd), ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma asteris' (strain HydB), ‘Ca. Phytoplasma solani' (strain SA-I), 'Ca. Phytoplasma ulmi' (strain EY-C) and 'Candidatus Phytoplasma pruni' (strain KVI) are plant pathogens that cause diseases of different plant species. In this study they were grown in vitro in host plants Gynura aurantiaca (Blume) DC. and Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don. Plant growth regulators, auxins and cytokinins, were supplemented to nutrient medium for cultivation of infected plants in order to test their effect on the growth and symptoms of host plants. The growth of infected and healthy host plants was monitored through three subcultures. In healthy and viroid-infected shoots of G. aurantiaca cytokinins suppresed growth; both non-infected and viroid-infected shoots showed better growth on the medium without cytokinins. Addition of auxin indole-3-butyric acid into medium caused better growth of C. roseus shoots infected with different phytoplasma strains and in some cases it caused remission of symptoms.
