Four out of five European crayfish species from Astacidae family inhabit Croatian freshwaters: Austropotamobius pallipes, Austropotamobius torrentium, Astacus astacus, Astacus leptodactylus. Crayfish species are the keystone species in freshwater ecosystems. Due to the increasing anthropogenic pressures, such as water regulation and water extraction, climate change and the introduction of invasive alien species, indigenous crayfish species are under increasing threat. The aim of this research was to study, for the first time, distribution and presence of crayfish in the urban area (artificial lakes) of Maksimir Park. Additionally, the goal was to estimate population size and structure, morphometric characteristics, the proportion of injuries and crayfish body condition. Two crayfish species were recorded in the Maksimir lakes: Astacus astacus (present in the Fourth and Fifth lake) and Astacus leptodactylus (present in the Second and Third Lake). Populations of both species are relatively abundant and stable. Significant differences in body condition, sex ratio, the proportion of injuries and measured morphometric parameters were recorded between species. Recorded differences are most likely the result of different trapping techniques applied, predation of alien invasive species of turtles and intraspecific competition. Obtained results will serve as a baseline for further research and monitoring of the crayfish fauna in Maksimir lakes.
