In the present study the quality of wastewater from the „Robule“ Lake, originated by the accumulation of wastewaters leaching from surface copper mine, prior to and following electrochemical purification was evaluated. Toxic and genotoxic effects of wastewater were evaluated with two test organisms, Lemna minor L. and Daphnia magna Straus., using Lemna, Daphnia and comet test. The percentage of mortality was evaluated as an indicator of toxicity in Daphnia test following 24 and 48h-exposure period. Photosynthetic pigments, malondialdehyde (indicates damage to membrane lipids), nonprotein thiols, total proteins and antioxidant enzymes peroxidase and catalase were evaluated as indicators of toxicity in duckweed following 24h- and 7-day exposure period. When exposed to wastewater, growth rate, N frond/N colony ratio, photosynthetic pigments, nonprotein thiols and total protein decreased while antioxidant enzymes, malondialdehyde content and DNA damage increased. EC50 for Daphnia magna was 0,21% and 0,06% following 24 and 48h-period of exposure, respectively. The values of almost all parameters observed in duckweed expose to treated wastewater were similar to control, while the mortality of daphnids in undiluted was very low.
