Abstract

The subject of this research were Lower Cretaceous deposits from the Mt. Svilaja region (SW part of the Adriatic-Dinaridic Carbonate Platforme) mostly composed of shallow-water carbonates and different types of limestone (mud-supported and grain-supported limestone). In such shallow-water carbonate platform environments benthic foraminifera and calcareous algae are common, representing the majority of microfossil assemblages. Laboratory analysis was done of 112 samples from two locations (Milešina and Jarebinjak). The microfossil assemblages (genus and species of foraminifera and algae) and microfacies characteristics of the deposits, in which they were found, were determined. A total number of 63 species of benthic foraminifera and calcareous algae were determined as well as twenty different microfacies. The results produced by micropaleontological and microfacies analyses of both locations were compared so that the changes occurring in microfossil assemblages during the Lower Cretaceous (Barremian—Albian) and the deposit environments where they appeared could be determined.
