Abstract

Karst Dace (Telestes karsticus Marčić and Mrakovčić, 2011) is a stenoaendemic fish species of the Danube basin belonging to the family Cyprinidae, order Cypriniformes. It was found only on three sites around Velika and Mala Kapela mountains. The aim of this study was to determine age and growth characteristics of Telestes carsticus in contribution to its protection. Fish samples were collected through thirteen months during 2007. and 2008. on the Sušik stream located in the Lug field. Six age groups were determined in a sample of 86 individuals, with females predominating in the older age groups. Age group 0+ - 1+ has the highest measured body weight and standard body length, while the age group 3+ - 4+ has the lowest body weight and standard body length. In a sample of 630 individuals males predominate, but females reach larger body size. Growth of Telestes karsticus population is positive allometric. The highest values of Fulton condition factor for males and juveniles was obtained in March, and for females in April. From the values of the coefficient of growth K we conclude that males grow faster than females, but among females reported higher hypothetical age at length zero and greater asymptotic length.
