Abstract

In the last ten years during the summer, mass mortality of sessile species was observed in the Mediterranean Sea as a result of increased water temperature (positive temperature anomalies) up to 40 meters depth. The most obvious negative changes were noticed at cnidarians Parazoanthus axinellae, Madracis pharensis, Leptopsammia pruvoti, Caryophyllia inornata, Eunicella singularis, Eunicella cavolini, Paramuricea clavata and Corallium rubrum. Changes were also noticed in other species such as sponges, gastropods, bryozoans and tunicates. Field studies were carried out in Telašcica bay, along the cliffs on stations Prisika, Mir, Mali Garmenjak, Veli Garmenjak and Sestrica Vela. Conditions of the biocenosis and their potential vulnerability were determined by hydrographic measurements (temperature, light intensity, salinity, pH of seawater) on the cliffs. Sea temperatures on 30 and 40 meters depth show high summer temperature anomalies for this depth of see. Longer period that can last up to 3 months is very likely the cause of mortality of sponges, corals and tunicates in study areas. Partial reduction in population (5 to 10% dead specimens) was noticed in each location. Special attention is focused to the red coral (Corallium rubrum), whose populations are endangered in the Mediterranean, including the PP "Telašcica". The most vulnerable are gorgonians Eunicella cavolini and Paramuricea clavata, and stony corals Caryophyllia inornata, Madracis pharensis and Leptopsammia pruvoti.
