Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the long term influence of the Plomin thermal power plant on the possible contamination of the surrounding soil by the heavy metals from the emitted coal ash. The main aim is to define the geochemical properties of the surrounding soil, determine the content of the potentially toxic chemical elements and furthermore, to interpret the influence of the thermal power plant on the environment. The content of silt and clay dominate in all samples, and the analysed soil is characterised by quartz, plagioclase, muscovite, chlorite and vermiculite. Due to the geological bedrock, i.e. limestones and dolomites, most of the pH values in the analysed soil are alkaline. The organic matter content in the soil, i.e. content of the ash particles in the organic matter, influence the cation exchange capacity more than the clay content in the soil. In addition, the content of the coal ash in the total organic matter content in the soil is highest nearest the power plant, and the concentrations of the analysed elements decrease with distance from the power plant. The origin of S, Cr and Co is predominantly anthropogenic and they show the negative influence of the power plant. The origin of Mn and Cu is partially geological and partially anthropogenic, while the origin of Ni, Zn and Ti is predominantly geological. Concentration values of the analysed elements are highly increased when compared to the legislative regulation values and therefore, they represent a danger and a risk for human health and the environment.
