Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of phosphate removal from wastewater using the three types of commercial materials onto which phosphate accumulating bacteria Acinetobacter junii were immobilized. Bacteria on the materials were first grown in C-medium (with low concentration of phosphate) and then transferred to the P-medium (with high concentration of phosphate). We followed which of the three used materials (carbon fiber, Culti-Sphere S and sawdust) were the most suitable for the immobilization of bacteria, customizable in the conditions in which they are located and were successful in P removal. The number of immobilized bacteria was the highest on the material Culti-Spher S (4,9×109 CFU g-1) but this material was not suitable for the removal of phosphate due to the collapse of the structure. Large number of bacteria was immobilized on the carbon fiber (1,9×109 CFU g-1) and it was material on which the bacteria removed phosphates effectively. The sawdust had 4,3×108 CFU g-1 of immobilized bacteria but water with sawdust turned dark and release of phosphate from the material occurred.
