Abstract

Term stress is defined as an every potential stress factor, abiotic or biotic, beyond optimum values for plant growth and development. One of the important abiotic factors is water stress, which is considered as a significant problem in plant cultivation. A perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is a valuable model organism in studies of stress influence on plants. Aim of this work was to study the effect of water stress on physiological parameters of perennial ryegrass and determine the physiological adaptations as well as the effect of addition of zeolite, mineral component which has ability to absorb water and nutrients. Perennial ryegrass was planted in substrate, with or without application of different granulates of zeolites in control and water stress conditions. The results showed that water deficit increased dry matter, protein and proline content and also catalase activity, while it did not have influence on superoxide dismutase and guaiacol peroxidase activity and lipid peroxidation. The least pronounced changes were noticed in plants grown in substrate with the smallest granulation of zeolite, which indicates the reduction of water stress even though it was shown that perennial ryegrass was a tolerant species also.
