Abstract

Water beetles of the familiy Elmidae (Coleoptera) are generally very poorly studied. Elmis aenea (Müller, 1806) and E. rioloides (Kuwert, 1890) species wich were collected from the Cetina River showed morphological differences in the structure of the pronotum and the male reproductive system both within the population and in relation to individuals of the same species in Central Europe. The main aim of this study was to analyze whether the observed morphological differences can be confirmed at the level of mtDNA. Phylogenetic analysis indicated the separation of specimens of E. rioloides from the Cetina River from typical representatives of Central European fauna, supporting the hypothesis that E. rioloides is a complex species. No significant genetic differences between populations of analyzed species with respect to the observed morphological features and / or location on the Cetina River were observed. Separation between the groups of E. rioloides from Central Europe and the Cetina River occurred in the Pleistocene which is consistent with the observation of the importance of Pleistocene refugia in speciation processes in the Balkans.
