Abstract

Bryozoans are tiny invertebrates that inhabit all types of aquatic ecosystems. They are small animals that form large cooperatives by asexual budding, which can reach the size of several tens of centimeters, while individual units within a colony have a size of several millimeters. Each individual within a colony functions as a separate zooid and is genetically identical to each other individual within the same colony. Most freshwater species of bryozoans belong to the class Phylactolaemata, while several species that tolerate brackish water belong to the class Gymnolaemata. The aim of this study was to isolate and multiply nuclear genes for 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA and ITS2 region as well as the mitochondrial COI gene from bryozoans collected in Croatia. The sequences were used to determine the molecular phylogenetic relationships of freshwater bryozoans recorded in Croatia with marine bryozoans, whose sequences were retrieved from the GenBank database. The genetic identification of the morphologically determined and undetermined samples of bryozoans collected in Croatia was verified by determining the haplotype structure and using phylogenetic trees, which contributed to the knowlege about distribution of freshwater and brackish groups of bryozoans in Croatia.
