Abstract

The research object of this thesis is land use and land cover change in the Krapina-zagorje County. Land-use and land cover changes reflect the character of a society's interaction with its physical environment, which becomes obvious when it is possible to observe different economic and social systems occupying the same environment. The area studied in this paper, Krapina-Zagorje County, has gone through major social and economic changes in the 1991- 2001 period, which has left its mark on the landscape. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with different approaches and methodologies used in analyzing land use and land cover change. A complex methodology is then used, consisting of remote sensing, statistical modelling and a questionnaire survey. Through remote sensing land use and land cover changes are quantified in a spatially explicit manner. Further on, statistical modelling is used to determine socio-geographic and biophysical drivers of land change and the questionnaire survey gathered information about households as decision makers in the process of land change. The results show that the land-use and land cover has changed in about 25% of the studied area and that biophysical drivers are statistically most significant drivers of change. The processes of agricultural intensification and abandonment, deforestation and reforestation as well as settlement expansion have been detected and analyzed. In the studied period forest areas and grasslands have decreased in size and agricultural land and built-up land have increased. The model used in this research analyzes the links between socio-geographic variables such as ageing of population, depopulation and changes in education or employment and the land use changes and could serve as an instrument in creating and local and regional policies dealing with sustainable development and environment protection.
