Abstract

The object of this research are the Middle Dalmatian Islands – Brač, Hvar, Vis, Šolta and Čiovo with belonging isles and islets including Drvenik Veli and Drvenik Mali, and the offshore islands of Jabuka, Brusnik, Sveti Andrija and Palagruža, or the islands of the Split – Dalmatian County. The aim of this research is to establish similarities and differences of the tourism development of the Middle Dalmatian Islands, its development and its spatial and socio-economic consequences and to try to predict the mutual impact of tourism and geographic features in the future. The main thesis of this research claims that, although it is the same group of islands with similar natural features, because of their differences in geographic position and socioeconomic development, tourism has developed in different ways and with different spatial and socio-economic consequence. This research tries to improve the understanding of complex and diverse processes and consequences caused by the tourism development in the area. The task of this research is to offer a better insight into the real consequences of this development, and that, accordingly, future studying of relations between tourism and geographic features will take into account some conclusions reached in this or similar researches. The research analyses natural geographic features and cultural and historical heritage of the area regarding to their tourism potentials. Demographic indicators and trends are studied in relation to their tourism development impacts and so is the socio-economic transformation of the islands’ societies. Tourism itself is presented by its historical development and the tourism indicators’ analysis for each island individually and for the whole archipelagos. Spatial changes are mostly analysed by observing of changes in the number of weekend houses and some other spatial indicators. Final synthetic chapter include the elaboration of the typology of settlements according to their tourism development intensity, SWOT analysis, future perspectives and conclusion.
