Abstract

In this study subtidal specimens of mussel were sampled at seven different locations in the Bay of Mali Ston. Histological examination of the digestive system was performed, and crystalline style was not found in all specimens, indicating the existence of a cyclical change in the process of feeding and extracellular digestion. For specimens sampled at a depth of four meters, condition index of digestive tubules varied depending on the location, where the variable that affected by these changes the most was the quantity of the particulate matter, i.e. available food. By the statistical comparison of the mean values of the condition index of the digestive tubules on seven sampling stations in the Bay of Mali Ston, four groups of similar locations were identified: Banja and Sutvid, Kuta and Duba, Brijesta and Bistrina,and Soca. At Bistrina station significantly higher condition index of mussels from the depth of one meter in November, can be related to differences in salinity recorded in February, as well as to less availability of food as compared with those at a depth of four meters. This study has shown that the condition index of digestive tubules of mussels is affected by many biotic and abiotic factors, most important being the amount of particulate matter, both organic and inorganic. In addition, the depth at which specimens are cultivated is also important.
