Abstract

Geothermal energy is the energy contained in the earth's interior. Practical uses of geothermal energy for bathing, recreational purposes and heating date back to history. The most active geothermal resources are near major plate boundaries where earthquakes and volcanoes are concentrated. Mayority of geothermal sources in Croatia where discovered during oil and gas exploration. The first geothermal power plant in Croatia is going to be constructed in Velika Ciglena near Bjelovar. In addition to construction of a geothermal power plant is planned to be constructed pools, greenhouses and fish farms. This should contribute to improving the economic situation of Bjelovarsko-bilogorske county. Geothermal energy is a clean and sustainble energy source, but its development still has some impact on the environment. The main environmental effects are gaseous emissions to the atmosphere, water pollution, land usage, induced seismicity, noise pollution.
