Abstract

This work analyses the existing locations of shopping centers and some appropriate areas for future development of shopping centers in Zagreb urban region. Shopping centers began to open in Zagreb since the mid 90-ies, at first in the city center, but under the influence of suburbanization shopping centers started to open on the city edge. Opening shopping centers outside the city started in the last couple years and in the near future this trend will become more pronounced, due to the strengthening of suburbanization and the lack of free building areas in the city. By overlapping layers that are created by analyzing selected factors using GIS tools, three most suitable areas were identified in the area of the Zagreb urban region. Characteristics of these areas are: good transport accessibility, thereby referring to the proximity of highways, state roads and county roads, a significant increase in population and distance from existing shopping centers.
