Abstract

This thesis deals with the historical and geographical development of the City of Sveti Ivan Zelina through sevral stages. Convenient natural and geographical characteristics of the Zelina area favoured the early population and development of the central settlement of Sveti Ivan Zelina. The backbone for the development of the settlement is the main traffic route, since the antique period untill today. In the Middle Ages, Sv. Ivan Zelina becomes an important mercantile settlement, and the 19th century development is based on the crafts. In the mid-20th century, in Sv. Ivan Zelina happens the process of deagraization and industrialization, and later on also the process of urbanization. Since the year 1990. untill today, Sv. Ivan Zelina is characterised by development of private enterprise and craft. In the future, it is important to encourage the economical and social development that would keep young, reproductive-age, working population in Sveti Ivan Zelina.
